When going about your normal day, the last thing you want is to be in a car accident. Unfortunately, car crashes happen every 200 seconds in Alabama, and the likelihood of being involved in an accident in a lifetime is 98%. With these odds, what should you do to prepare yourself if you’re ever in this situation?

Attorney Steve Floyd recently appeared on the news with host Ellis Eskew to discuss what Alabama drivers need to know.

What should you do right after the accident?

Steve explained the most important thing to do is stay calm. This may be difficult as car accidents are scary and stressful, but it’s important to take a deep breath and stay as calm as possible in this situation. You must also always remember to stay safe. If you need to exit your car, make sure it’s safe to do so.

You should also have all of your insurance information always at the ready, including your driver’s license and insurance cards. After an accident, you’re likely overwhelmed and frazzled, so consider keeping insurance information in a folder in your glove box.

Should you call the police?

You should call the police in order to get an accident report as quickly as possible, ideally at the scene of the accident. A police report will provide a thorough documentation of events as they occurred, which is very important to have.

The report will also include information such as drivers’ names, addresses, phone numbers, and insurance information.

What happens if you are injured?

Steve explained that you should mention if you are in pain and accept treatment on the scene if needed. You may need to be taken to the emergency room, depending on your injuries.

If you do not go to the emergency room, but are experiencing pain, you shouldn’t just let it go. You should see a doctor within 72 hours of an accident.

When should you contact an attorney?

If you are seriously injured, you should contact an attorney immediately to help get you the full compensation you deserve for your medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering.

The goal of the insurance company is to pay you as little as possible, but you can’t take this risk with your health on the line.

The insurance companies have their own attorneys, but they are working for the insurance company. “We want to work for you to get a settlement that’s fair,” Steve said.

Is there a limit on when I can contact an attorney about an accident?

Keep in mind that the statute of limitations in Alabama following a car accident is two years.  Therefore, it is important to contact an attorney to learn about your legal options as soon as possible. You cannot take legal action if the accident was more than two years ago.
