Here are some tips to remember that can help you avoid a dangerous dog-bite related accident:

  • Pay Attention to the Dogs Body Language – It is important to put a safe distance between you and a dog if you sense the dog is uncomfortable. Look for a tensed body, stiff tail, pulled back head or ears, furrowed brow, intense stare or retreating actions.
  • If You are Approached by a Dog – Resist the urge to run away or scream, remain motionless and avoid eye contact. Once the dog loses interest in you, slowly walk away until you are out of sight.
  • Never Take Food from a Dog That is Eating – Never try to play with or walk towards a dog that is eating. He may think that you are trying to take his food and can become aggressive.
  • If You are Bitten – Immediately wash the wound with soap and warm water and call 9-1-1 to report the incident. If the wound is severe, make sure to get proper medical care immediately and contact you physician for additional care/advice.

Millions of Americans consider their dogs to be an important part of their family. However, for all of the great memories that dogs can bring into our lives, it is critical to always remember that they are still animals.  As a pet owner, it is your responsibility to properly train your dog, and care for your dog to ensure the safety of visitors/pedestrians.

Proper training can reduce the chance that your dog will be involved in a serious or fatal attack.
