Increase in Alabama Car Accident Fatalities During Spring Break
According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), the number of fatal accidents on Alabama roads more than doubles during college spring break season. This brings the number of fatalities to approximately 30-36, all of which could have been prevented.
The increase in accidents during this time is in part because more college students are on the roads driving to their destinations, and there is an increase in risky behaviors such as drinking and driving, texting and driving and speeding.
All drivers, including college students on spring break, must be responsible drivers and make safe choices in order to avoid accidents and save lives. This includes not using a phone while driving, obeying speed limits, wearing a seat belt at all times and never drinking and driving.
Spring break can be synonymous with drinking. Therefore, those who have been drinking should have a designated, sober driver take them home, or use a ride-sharing service to reach their destinations safely. You should never get in a car with a drunk driver.
Alabama Drunk Driving at a Glace
- 279 people died in drink driving accidents in Alabama in 2017.
- Alabama is the fifth-highest state for impaired driving deaths.
A mistake can cause irreversible and life-changing consequences, but avoiding drinking and driving, speeding and texting while driving could save a life. By being alert and making responsible decisions, we hope that Alabama roads will be safer.
