Fourth of July Weekend Driving Safety Tips
Fourth of July is almost here, and many people are looking forward to visiting friends and family for picnics, pool parties and firework celebrations. With more people on the road traveling, and an increased risk of drunk driving during the holiday, it’s important to take precautions to help ensure everyone has a happy and safe Fourth of July.
How Deadly Are Crashes During the Fourth of July Holiday?
Last year alone, Alabama State Troopers responded to an alarming 18 fatalities during the Independence Day Weekend. Nationally, 40% of all highway deaths from 2007-2011 were caused by drunk drivers during this time period. Unfortunately, approximately 200 people die in car accidents in the U.S. each year during the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
As reported in our recent blog post, Alabama ranks as the 5th highest in the nation for drunk driving fatalities. Pair that with an increased number of drunk drivers on the road, on their way back from bars and family celebrations where they have been drinking, it is a recipe for disaster during the holiday weekend.
Drunk Driving is 100% Preventable.
Yet, drunk driving is completely preventable. You should always avoid drinking and driving, and make sure to have a plan before going out, whether that is assigning a designated driver or using a ride share app to arrive to your location and home safely.
