Alabama Ranks Third in Nation for Traffic Fatalities Caused by Speeding

new study found that Alabama ranks as the third-highest in the United States for the number of traffic fatalities caused by speeding—behind only South Carolina and New Mexico.

According to the study, Alabama reports 6.52 speeding-related deaths each year per 100,000 residents, placing the number of speed-related deaths above even DUI fatalities.

Spokesperson Clay Ingram of the American Automobile Association (AAA) states that nearly 1,000 Alabama residents lose their lives in car accidents each year. The time from Memorial Day to Labor Day often sees the most fatalities. In addition to speeding, he cites the following contributors to car accidents:

  • Low Seat Belt Usage
  • High Traffic Volume
