Local Prattville Resident Death reminds us of the Importance of Wearing a Seat Belt
According to the most recent report from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) over 50% of fatalities in motor vehicle crashes occur due to people not wearing a seat belt. The study shows out of 22,441 passenger vehicle occupants who died in motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2015, more than half of teens and adults who died in crashes were unrestrained at the time of the crash.
Due to the large amount of unrestrained passenger fatalities, many states have taken action including Alabama. Alabama is one of 34 states which has primary enforcement seat belt laws in place, meaning that an occupant can be ticketed for not a wearing seat belt. Each front-seat occupant of a “passenger car” that violates this law in Alabama, including children and adults, will be issued a fine of $25.00.
This past weekend in Prattville, a woman was driving on U.S. Highway 82 near the 133 mile marker when her vehicle left the road and overturned. Unfortunately, the woman was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the victim during this time.
